NZKI One Star Sea Kayak Scope

NZKI 1 Star is an introductory sea kayak skills qualification.

1 Star Profile

A NZKI 1 Star paddler will:

  • Demonstrate competency in kayak paddle strokes and rescues on flat sheltered water;
  • Demonstrate a good general knowledge of kayaks, kayaking;
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge of safety management and weather;
  • Role model accepted environmental practices and
  • Role model best kayaking skills.

The assessment of the skills for NZKI 1 Star will be carried out on flat sheltered water as follows:

  • Wind not exceeding 15knots;
  • Negligible or no swell and
  • No significant tidal flow.

Instructional Scope

As NZKI 1 Star is a foundation kayaking skills assessment there are no instructional requirements. 

Craft

The NZKI 1 Star assessment will be carried out in a single or double sea kayak as follows:

  • Enclosed cockpit with;
  • Three or more compartments including the cockpit separated by fixed bulkheads.

Pre-requisites

As this is the foundation skills assessment there are no pre-requisites for this assessment. 

Revalidation

There is no revalidation requirement for the NZKI 1 Star kayaker.  They are expected to roll model their skills.

Progressing to NZKI 2 Star and Leader

To progress to the next levels a 1 Star kayaker:

  • Gain the necessary logged experience as detailed in the relevant syllabi’s;
  • Complete the Coast Guard VHF Radio Operators qualification;
  • Be able to eskimo roll;
  • Attend the Canoe and Kayak Leader training programme and
  • Work with a Canoe and Kayak instructor to gain experience

Conditions

The assessment of the skills for NZKI 1 Star will be carried out on flat sheltered water as follows:

Technical Competencies

Practical assessment

  1. Preparation, Launching and landing.
  2. Forward and reverse paddling.
  3. Forward and reverse static turning. (Sweep Stroke)
  4. Moving sideways. (Draw Stroke)
  5. Stopping.
  6. Turning on the move. (Stern Rudder, sweep stroke)
  7. Supporting. (Low Brace)
  8. Rescuing another paddler in deep water. (T Rescue)
  9. Self-rescue in deep water. (Paddle Float)
  10. Eskimo Rescue.
  11. Recue another kayaker using a simple tow. (Short or long tow line)
  12. Rescue another kayaker who has lost their kayak. (Stern Deck Carry, Bow carry)
