NZKI  One Star White Water Personal Skills Award And Grade Two River Racing Certificate

A personal skill and knowledge based assessment
Based on a Grade Two River.
Duration 2 hours on water and a 1/2 hour written exam

The successful candidate will be suitable to race and paddle on Grade Two Rivers. 
One Assessor to four Candidates
Cost $195

NZKI One Star White Water Personal Skills Award and Grade Two River Racing Certificate is an introductory White-water/ Multisport skills qualification to a Grade Two level.

NZKI One Star White Water Personal Skills Award and Grade Two River Racing Certificate Profile

An NZKI One Star White WaterCertificate paddler will:

  • Demonstrate competency in kayak paddle strokes and rescues on Grade Two water;
  • Demonstrate a good general knowledge of kayaks, kayaking;
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge of safety management and weather;
  • Role model accepted environmental practices and
  • Role model best kayaking skills.

The assessment of the skills for NZKI Grade Two Certificate will be carried out on Grade Two water.

Instructional Scope

As NZKI One Star White Water Certificate is a foundation kayaking skills assessment there are no instructional requirements. 

Craft

The NZKI One Star White Water Certificate assessment will be carried out in a White-water kayak or, for multisport, a single or double sea kayak or multisport kayaks as follows:

  • Enclosed cockpit
  • 4.5 metres or longer (for multisport)

Pre-requisites

As this is the foundation skills assessment there are no pre-requisites for this assessment. 

Revalidation

There is no revalidation requirement for the NZKI One Star White Water Certificate kayaker.  They are expected to roll model their skills.

Progressing to NZKI 2 Star and Leader

To progress to the next levels a Two Star White Water kayaker:

  • Gain the necessary logged experience as detailed in the relevant syllabi’s;
  • Complete the Coast Guard VHF Radio Operators Qualification;
  • Be able to Eskimo roll;
  • Attend the Canoe & Kayak Leader training programme and Work with a Canoe & Kayak instructor to gain experience.

Conditions

The assessment of the skills for NZKI One Star White-water Certificate will be carried out on flat water and Grade Two rapids. At no time should you expose clients to Grade Three Rapids

Technical Competencies

Proficiency in the following will be assessed:

  • Forward Power Stroke
  • Reverse Power Stroke
  • Forward Sweep Stroke
  • Reverse Sweep Stroke
  • Emergency Stop
  • Eddie Turns - Breaking in and Out
  • Forward Ferry Glides
  • Reverse Ferry Glides
  • Low Brace (spray skirt should get wet) - Can use appropriately while paddling in rapid
  • Draw Stroke
  • Stern Rudder
  • Entry and Exit to a bank
  • River Reading Skill - Identifies and responds appropriately to Grade 2 river features. Eddylines, wave trains, holes, buffer waves, bluffs, side currents, and boil.
  • Identifies and demonstrates paddling safe and efficient lines.
  • Eddylines, wave trains, holes, buffer waves, bluffs, side currents and boils
  • Capsize and swim 50 meters, Re-enter.
    Demonstrates self-rescue with kayak and gear. Candidate capsizes, stays calm, gathers equipment and efficiently moves to the bank. Empties boat and paddling again within
    efficient timeframe.
  • Swimming -
    Demonstrates safe rapid float position (on the back, feet first, feet up etc).
  • Combat swim a 75 metre Grade Two Rapid achieving designated eddies. Demonstrates assertive white-water swimming across wave train and eddyline.
  • Stern Deck Rescue a kayaker and then paddle a Grade Two Rapid landing the rescued paddler in a safe eddy.  
  • Potential Hazards - Recognises and understands hazards associated with kayaking, including broaching, strainers and foot entrapment. The appropriate actions required to avoid or deal with these hazards are described and/or demonstrated.
  • The Reason for warm up and stretching
  • River reading skills that enable the candidate to lead down Grade Two Rapids

Kayaking Gear to be shown to the Assessor

  • Paddle
  • Spray skirt
  • Kayaking helmet designed for paddle sports
  • Buoyancy vest (PFD) securely fitting, free of defects and of 50N minimum buoyancy (type 406 specialist PFD that complies with NZS standard)
  • Repair/duct tape (at least 10m)
  • Dry-bag (must be large enough to fit all compulsory gear into, recommended volume 15L +)
  • Thermal gloves
  • Thermal balaclava or hat
  • Waterproof long sleeved PADDLE SPECIFIC jacket (Seam sealed and constructed of durable material) (minimum of neoprene cuffs)
  • Waterproof pants (Seam sealed and constructed of durable material)
  • Long Sleeve thermal base layer top
  • Full-length thermal base layer pants
  • Long sleeved thermal mid layer top (with insulation properties approx. 220gsm or greater)
  • Thermal socks (synthetic, merino or similar – for if you must spend a period of time on the river bank)
  • Whistle – attached to PFD
  • Foil Survival BAG (NOT a blanket) - for kayak section must be carried on the person (in PFD or pocket)
  • First aid kit containing
    o   1.5m long (unstretched) roll of 5 cm wide crepe bandage 
    o   5m long roll of 2 cm wide strapping tape 
    o   10 Band-Aid strips 
    o   Triangular bandage 
    o   Scissors 
    o   4 x pain relief tablets (that can be used to treat pain in case of injury while help arrives – always follow the directions for taking medications)
    o   Any Competitor specific medication
  • Food & Drink

Based on a Grade Two River over Five Kilometers long.
Duration 2 hours on water and a 1/2 hour written exam


The successful candidate will be suitable to Guide on Grade One rivers and assist on Grade Two Instruction Courses and Tours
