NZKI two Star Sea Kayak Scope

NZKI 2 Star is the first instructional qualification.

2 Star Profile

A NZKI 2 Star paddler will be able to:

  • Demonstrate competency in kayak paddle strokes and rescues on flat sheltered water;
  • Demonstrate a good general knowledge of kayaks and kayaking;
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge of safety management and weather;
  • Plan and prepare a multi-day sea kayaking trip;
  • Lead and manage groups on a multi-day trip;
  • Instruct a group of beginner kayakers through the Canoe & Kayak Introductory Sea Kayak Course;
  • Role model accepted environmental practices and
  • Role model best kayaking skills.
  • The assessment of the skills for NZKI 2 Star will be carried out on flat sheltered water as follows:
  • Wind not exceeding 15knots;
  • Negligible or no swell and
  • No significant tidal flow.

NZKI 2 Star Scope

A NZKI 2 Star kayaker will be able to lead and instruct a Canoe & Kayak Introductory Sea Kayak Course on flat sheltered conditions. 

Craft

The NZKI 2 Star assessment will be carried out in a single sea kayak as follows:

  • Enclosed cockpit with;
  • Three or more compartments including the cockpit separated by fixed bulkheads.

Pre-requisites

  • To be assessed for the NZKI 2 Star award the participant must:
  • Have no less than 50 logged kayak trips in a variety of locations, conditions and durations;
  • Have instruction experience gained by assisting another Canoe & Kayak instructor;
  • Hold a NZKI 1 Star or equivalent qualification;
  • Have been leader on no less than 5 trips;
  • Have completed the Canoe & Kayak Leader training programme or equivalent;
  • Hold a valid outdoor first aid certificate and
  • Hold a Coast Guard VHF Radio Operators Certificate and Call Sign.

Revalidation

  • To maintain an active status as a NZKI 2 Star instructor the holder must have undertaken annually:
  • 1 day of professional development;
  • Instructed at least 10 students through the Introductory Sea Kayaking Course;
  • Completed 20 new logged kayak trips and
  • Undertaken a peer review session every 2 years.

Progressing to NZKI 2 Star Endorsed

To progress to the next level a 2 Star kayaker must:

  • Be able to Eskimo roll.

 NZKI TWO STAR SEA KAYAK with Endorsement SCOPE

The NZKI 2 Star with endorsement allows you to instruct Eskimo rolling.

2 Star with Endorsement Profile

To earn the Endorsement, a NZKI 2 Star kayaker will be able to complete the following in addition to the above:

  • Eskimo roll a sea kayak;
  • Instruct an Eskimo rolling class

 Endorsement Scope

A NZKI 2 Star instructor will be able to lead and instruct the Canoe & Kayak Introductory Sea Kayak Course and Eskimo Rolling Course on flat sheltered conditions. 

 Additional Pre-requisites

To be assessed for the NZKI 2 Star award Endorsement the participant must additionally:

  • Have Eskimo rolling instruction experience gained by assisting another Canoe & Kayak Instructor.

Revalidation

To maintain an active status as a NZKI 2 Star Instructor the holder must additionally have undertaken annually:

  • Instructed at least 5 students through the Eskimo Rolling course.

Progressing to NZKI 3 Star

To progress to the next levels a 2 Star kayaker:

  • Gain the necessary logged experience as detailed in the relevant syllabus and
  • Be able to eskimo roll in surf.

The assessment of the skills for NZKI 2 Star will be carried out on flat sheltered water as follows:

Wind not exceeding 15knots;

Negligible or no swell and

No significant tidal flow.

Forward and reverse static turning. (Sweep Stroke)

Moving sideways. (Draw Stroke)

Turning on the move. (Stern Rudder, Bow Rudder, Sweep Stroke)

Supporting. (Low Brace)

Rescuing another paddler in deep water. (T Rescue, Leg over, swimming, stirrup)

Self-rescue in deep water. (Paddle Float, John Wayne)

Eskimo Rescue.

Recue another kayaker using a simple tows. (Short or long tow line, contact tow)

Rescue another kayaker who has lost their kayak. (Stern Deck Carry, Bow Carry)

Theory (45 minute multi-choice exam paper)
